These policies have been influenced by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. While the former has not enjoyed a good reputaion in the third world owing to its demand curtailment-oriented conditionality, the role of the latter has been considered to be growth-oriented with its structural adjustment policies. Nevertheless, not a few countries in the third world are suffering from the miserable performances in the socio-economic development. This paper addresses major policy issues associated with the structural adjustment policies proposed by the World Bank and their repercussions on the social development and the wellbeing of the people in the third world.
