One is establishing the core competencies in a value chain, and the other is managing the relationships between the inside and outside of the value chain. The author suggests that by strategically outsourcing and emphasizing a company's core competencies managers could solve the two problems and leverage their firm's skills and resources for increased competitiveness. For strategically outsourcing, the author develops the concept of "Linkage Capability" which could be used to connect in-house capacity with bussiness partners in a value-added system. Linkage Capability could provide flexibility allowing a quick response to the changing environment through reoptimizing the interface under the new value-creating system of the partners involved.
