As said from many quarters, the shift of Japanese companies to overseas may bring about "hollowness" to the Japanese industry and the gaining power of China indeed is a threat to the Japanese economy.This paper firstly points out the changes in the industrial structure of Japan and analyzes the reasons for Japanese manufactures going to overseas. Secondly, it shows the existence of complementary relationship between Japanese and Chinese companies based on the investigations and statistical data. Thirdly, it recommends the perspective of product architecture for analyzing entry strategies of Japanese companies in a complementary relationship with their counterparts in China. Finally, it discusses the ways and methods to compete and survive by Japanese companies in China from the viewpoints of business partnership, risk management, and localization.
